The Challenge: A 30-Foot Vertical Climb
This project required a complete "ground-up" landscaping solution on a property defined by extreme topographical challenges. We began the build roughly 50 feet away from the home and 30 feet below the house grade. The objective was to navigate a series of complex levels to reach a final patio grade exactly 2 inches below the home’s threshold.
The primary hurdle was restricted machine access combined with this steep, unforgiving slope. We managed a multi-level build where traditional heavy equipment could not maneuver, requiring owner-led, precision problem-solving to ensure the structural integrity of the hillside while hitting exacting finish heights.
The Solution: Precision Engineering & Hand-Set Masonry
Working in collaboration with a reputable builder, we executed a full design-build package that balanced heavy-duty engineering with high-end aesthetics. To address the drainage and access constraints, we integrated a specialized "rip-rap" section for efficient runoff and utilized our 4-man crew to hand-set stone in areas inaccessible to machinery.

Structural Masonry: Over 400 linear feet of expansive multi-level retaining walls using local Kettle Valley stone to bridge the 30-foot elevation gap.
Custom Hardscapes: Paver decks featuring intricate inlay patterns and a seamless, custom-built staircase connecting the tiers.
Pedestal Tile Deck: A 300 sq. ft. precision-laid porcelain tile deck installed on a modern, level-correcting pedestal system to meet the house threshold perfectly.
Signature Elements: A natural flagstone water feature and a custom-built outdoor fireplace with a dedicated insert.
Integrated Lighting: A custom-designed low-voltage package to highlight the stonework and ensure safety across the multi-level elevations.
The Result
By overcoming the "unbuildable" nature of the site's topography, we provided an unmatched outdoor living space. We successfully transitioned the grade from the lower reaches of the property up to the back patio, ensuring a functional, beautiful flow that integrates perfectly with the home’s architecture.
